supporting thunderbird - strange issue between start page (Settings) and inapp notifications (on macOS)
Hi. I donate 20 bucks a month to Thunderbird. Love it.
Was wondering if there is a way to disable the "support thunderbird" pop ups that always occur upon launch.
Much obliged.

Go to Settings > General > Start Page, delete the "https://live.thunderbird.net/%APP%/start?locale=....." address and on next TB starts you'll see an empty start page. If you don't like a white start page you can customise it by adding the path to some landscape picture or some person's photo in the "Location" bar
Boom, thanks Mapenzi. No longer have to close the support tab pop up, which I'll take as a win.
Much obliged!
Thank you for your donation.
You might be seeing the start page mentioned by Mapenzi (which is not a "Support Thunderbird page) - is a help page with bug reporting, how to get support, etc, of which donate is a small part).
Or, you might be seeing something else.
Please specify the contents exactly.
Thanks for the reply, Wayne.
A new tab would pop up soliciting for donations which I'm all for, and I would have to close it.
What Mapenzi suggested worked, though. The tab no longer pops up which'll work.
Much appreciated!

The start page does not show in a tab. It shows in the main viewing area, where messages normally display.
A new tab should only come up under two conditions: 1. If you got a notification asking you to donate 2. You clicked the donate link in the start page.
So, the start page should not cause a new tab or a donation pop up. But it sounds like it did. If it did, please tell us. A screen shot of the entire Thunderbird window would be even better, and much appreciated so we can solve the problem potentially for other users.
An example from my Mac, which correctly shows the start page.
Ah, gotcha Wayne.
Yeah, a new tab would appear altogether and I would have to close it.
Funny thing, I undid the fix that Mapenzi suggested, and it won't come up.
I did find someone on reddit who has the same issue.
Gentlemen, this is (picture) what I see when I open TB 138 in my test profile of the en-US version. It seems to be the same picture as Wayne's. But I have noticed that many users in TB forums call this a "donation page" since it begins with "Support Us" and "Donate"

If you had the issue shown on reddit my advise shouldn’t have helped. I never saw this "donate tab" before. That's why I meant you spoke of the "default start page".
Anyhow I have an explanation: you received a "SUPPORT THUNDERBIRD" email and opened it in a new tab without closing the tab before you quit TB. Since TB proceeds to an automatic session restore on next start, this "support Thunderbird" tab would reappear each time unless you close the tab.
I hear ya.
Funny thing is I have a 3 mac studio/1 imac/1 PC setup with Thunderbird on all, and the pop up tab would happen on all. Been happening for the past 3 weeks or so.
Bottom line it hasn't popped up since your suggestion, so I'm good.

I am glad to hear that it has stopped on all your computers. Very nice studio, indeed !
Ha, was able to make it pop up again.
Cadence:
- power on macs
- Thunderbird set to auto launch
- after a minute or so the donation solicitation tab appears
- show start page in settings was unchecked
Eh, whatareyougonnado.
Ooo, curveball!
On two of my computers the startpage option is checked, but the solicitation tab popped up anyway.
It's a mystery!
budlightlime, Thanks for all this info.
Do you have any language packs installed?
And, when you make settings changes and restart Thunderbird, do those changes stick, or do the get reversed to original setting?
This is a very interesting issue, but I am very short on available time, so I will probably bring some other people in to look at this. Any additional information you can offer would be very helpful.
Thanks for the time, Wayne.
0 urgency on this end.
I'll test cadences over the next couple of days and make notes of which computers have the pop up happen and which don't.
As of this morning, all computers (3 macs, 1 PC) had the same setting of start up page option checked, but only two of the computers had pop ups. All the Macs have the same operating system, Tiger 10.4. Just kidding, Sequoia 15.5
No language packs installed.
I appreciate the help nonetheless!

It is doubtful that the start page open could have anything to do with the appeal popping up. But if you find such a combination that is reproducible we would be interested.
And if the tab isn't closed before restarting then it will keep appearing.
If the computer either a) has a new profile where thunderbird was not run before, or b) was just updated to a certain version of 128 (I'm not sure of the number just now) then you will get the tab.
And after you close the tab and restart Thunderbird, then the appeal tab should no longer appear.
Appeal tab! Gotcha.
Yeah, I close the tab everytime when I see it.
When it comes to computers, who knows.
In my head:
- have all settings the same at the end of day before powering down
- in the morning power up and see what computers have the appeal tab pop up
- change settings to all computers, all matching at the end of day before powering down
- in the morning power up and see what computers have the appeal tab pop up
Report back.
Thanks again!
You can also get unexpected results if you start Thunderbird without networking. Or start it as "offline".
Looking forward to your results.
Hey how's it going.
Haven't discovered any rhyme or reason.
I have another office where all the computers are on the latest Sequoia and Thunderbird version, but no appeal tab pop ups.
Again, 0 urgency. But will pay attention to see if I can deciper a pattern.
