Thunderbird damaged during Mac-to-Mac migration, need to get old emails into new Thunderbird on new Mac
Hi Folks,
I hope you can help me with my little problem.
Thunderbird was damaged during the migration to the new Mac, so I installed a new version of Thunderbird on the new Mac and now want to get the emails from my old Mac into the new Thunderbird. I think I know where the files for the new Thunderbird are: /Users//Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/xxxxxxx.default-release/imapMail/map.xxx.net, so is it as easy as replacing those files with the files in the equivalent folder on the old Mac?
Alternatively, I just discovered this function within Thunderbird itself: "Import Settings and Data from a Thunderbird Profile." Might this be useful, and if so, how would I go about it?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Cheers! Chris

You can use the Import feature of Thunderbird to transfer your message and address book datadata from the old to the new Mac. If in the past you had severe problems with Thunderbird on the old Mac it might be preferable to start with a new TB profile on the new Mac, all the more so since you use the IMAP protocol which facilitates the folder and message synchronisation.

No, you do not want to use the folder that you found. That is for IMAP. If you set up your account in the new profile, you will get those messages from the server automatically.
If you have messages in local folders in the old profile, use the add-on ImportExportToolsNG to import them into the new profile.
Thanks for your replies, Mapenzi and Scooter. I'll give them a try. One further question: Thunderbird on my old Mac had a POP profile while the Thunderbird on my new Mac has an IMAP profile. Is that going to be a problem?
If you want to switch from a POP account to an IMAP account, you have more work to do. These are different kinds of accounts on the server, not just in Thunderbird. I am sorry that I cannot help because I have not used a POP account in a very long time. Maybe Mapenzi or others can help.
Thanks, Scooter. Yes, it's actually my wife's computer and email, and her account does go way back. So we'll hope for more help on this.

There are no POP or IMAP profiles in Thunderbird but Thunderbird can work with POP accounts and/or IMAP accounts. If the old POP account has the same email address as the IMAP account on the new Mac I propose the following manipulation: on the old Mac open the profile folder, go to & open the folder Mail in which you should find an account named somewhat like "pop.xxx.xx" which contains the message files of the POP account. Copy the files (without suffix) Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Archives, Trash on a USB stick and transfer them on the new Mac.
On the new Mac open the profile folder and quit Thunderbird. In the profile folder go to Mail > Local Folders and paste the message files transferred from the old Mac. When you restart TB you should find folders like Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Deleted, ...in your Local Folders. From there you can copy the messages to the corresponding folders in the IMAP account.
If you are not sure which message files to transfer from the old to the new Mac, show a screen shot of the contents of the "pop.xxx.xx" folder in Mail on the old Mac.
